George W. Ransom

VESTAL, N.Y. — George W. Ransom, 83, of Vestal and Hamden, N.Y., passed away April 28, 2008.

He was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the son of John William and Hattie (Dorer) Ransom. He was a resident of Hamden for 54 years and of Vestal for the past seven years. George retired from the Delaware County Highway Department in 1999, after 18 years of service. He worked for the village of Walton in public works in 1977-78. He also worked for Paul Shields Plumbing and Heating, Frank Race Plumbing and Heating, and S.J. Bailey and Sons.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 and a member of the American Legion Post in Delhi. He was an avid school supporter, enjoying sports, theater and concerts. He enjoyed reading and conversing with friends.

He is survived by two daughter, Alice Anita (Ransom) and David C. Van Winkle of Vestal, and Georgianna (Ransom) and J. Marc Burgin of Franklin; a brother, Abe Ransom of Utica, Ohio; two sisters, Harriett Gordon of Seville, Ohio, and Mary Frazier of Mount Vernon, Ohio; six grandchildren, Lynn Jr., Sarah and Abigail Terry, and Brett, Miranda and Keith Burgin.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John of New Jersey and Mark of Ohio.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m., in Friendship Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Ohio.
