Willis Rummel Jr.

MOUNT VERNON — Willis E. “Will” Rummel Jr., 68, of Mount Vernon died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Will was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Mount Vernon to Willis E. Rummel Sr. and Hazel Mae (Agnew) Rummel. He was a 1958 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and was a proud member of the Yellow Jackets undefeated 1956 and 1957 football teams. Will was honored as First Team All-Central Buckeye League and Second Team All-Ohio for his play on those teams. He enlisted and served with the U.S. Army in the early 1960s.

Following his enlistment, Will returned to Mount Vernon and began his employment at Cooper-Bessemer, a tenure that lasted 40 years until his retirement in 2004. With his employment as a senior field service representative at Cooper Energy Services, Will traveled throughout the world. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Mount Vernon where he was a former elder. He was a former member and past president of the Mount Vernon Exchange Club.

Although Will had many interests, the light of his life was his son and grandsons.

Surviving are his wife, Linda (Kinnard) Rummel, whom he married July 23, 1961; his son and daughter-in-law, Darrin and Shari Rummel of Mount Vernon; his three grandsons, Nick, Ethan and Jack; his brother, Ronald (Martha) Rummel of Chesterfield, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Anna Kinnard; his sister-in-law, Joan Macdonald of Seattle, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Will was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Dale Kinnard; and a brother-in-law, Lt. Dennis Kinnard.

Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, where funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jamie Gump officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
