Frances ‘Fran’ Ayers

MOUNT VERNON — Frances “Fran” Ayers of Mount Vernon died at her home Sunday, June 15, 2008.

Fran was born in Newark to William Ferry and Goldie (Starkey) Ferry and graduated from Parkersburg West Virginia High School in 1937. She also was a graduate of the Huntington West Virginia Beauty School. Fran was a managing cosmetologist at Fran’s Beauty Shop in Mount Vernon for 54 years.

Fran is survived by her husband of 68 years, Edwin T. “Ed” Ayers; her daughter, Carlena of Crossville, Tenn.; her son, Edwin D. of Columbus; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and Dorothy and Jim Pickering of Bellevue, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Russell and Jack Ferry; and a grandson, Paul Ayers.

Fran was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, was a member and past matron of Knox Chapter 236, Order of Eastern Star, in Mount Vernon and was a charter member, and recently received her 60-year service pin from the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Mount Vernon.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, where memorial services by Beta Sigma Phi and Knox Chapter 236, Order of Eastern Star, will follow calling hours. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gambier. A service celebrating the life of Frances “Fran” Ayers will be Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m. at the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon with the Rev. Dr. David Baker officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Hospice of Knox County or the Gay Street United Methodist Church living memorial fund.
