Daurl F. Shaffer
BELLVILLE — Daurl F. Shaffer, 85, of Bellville died in his home, Monday morning, July 7, 2008, following a long illness.
A lifelong area resident, Daurl was born on July 21, 1922, to John and Nettie (Walters) Shaffer, and was a graduate of Bellville High School, class of 1940. Following high school Daurl was united in marriage with Mildred (Layer) Shaffer on Feb. 28, 1945. Soon after their wedding, Daurl joined the U.S. Army serving our country during World War II. Following the war, Daurl worked at the former Westinghouse in the press room and as a range assembler. He later worked for Gorman Rupp as a pump technician testing pumps, and retired after 24 years of service. He was a member of the Bellville Fair Board for 24 years. Ever the patriot, he was a member of the Bellville AMVETS Post 33, the Irvin Hiskey Post 535 American Legion, Bellville, and the Clearfork Valley Post 9825, VFW, where served as past commander. He was also 4-H advisor. In the warmer months Daurl enjoyed attending fairs. Daurl simply never met a stranger. He just had a way of making everybody feel comfortable. He will be remembered for his patience, and love for his family especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Donald (Doc) and Lauren Shaffer of Bellville; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Daniel White of Bellville; grandchildren, Amy and Lance Wilson of New Holstein, Wis., Daniel and Angela Shaffer of Bellville, Brent and Melissa White of Mansfield and Nancy White of Bellville; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Wilson, Seth Wilson and Evan Shaffer; a brother-in-law, Richard Layer of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Mary Meese of Bellville; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred E. Shaffer, who passed away on June 16, 2008. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 9, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Douglas Pretorius will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by Irvin Hiskey Post 535 American Legion, Bellville, will follow in Bellville Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Bellville Fair Board, St. Paul Lutheran Church, or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.
