Thomas W. Coxey
MOUNT VERNON — Thomas W. Coxey, 89, of Pleasant Valley Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday morning, July 12, 2008, at The Laurels of Mount Vernon.
He was born July 21, 1918, in Massillon, a son of the late Horace Lash Coxey and Mary Elizabeth Wren. He was a longtime resident of the Mount Vernon area and was retired from the Continental Can Co. in Mount Vernon. Thomas was a nephew of Paul and Mayme Wren and was the last surviving grandchild of the renowned Jacob Sechler “The General” Coxey. Thomas served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1940 to 1946. He was a life member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon and was a member of the AMVETS in Mount Vernon.
Thomas is survived by his nephew and niece, Bob and Paula Warren; and loving friends, Mike and Debbie Nauman, Russ and Jan Brooks, Don and Barb Spearman, Ron and Betty Melick, Mary Blanton, and Harold and Marcia Bond.
In addition to his parents, Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty Olene (Powell) Coxey, on Dec. 29, 2001; brothers, John Richard Coxey and Horace Coxey; and sisters, Elizabeth Ann Kelly, Catherine Constance Waltz and Mary Jane Thompson.
Friends may call at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, on Wednesday, July 16, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
