John D. Fleisher

MOUNT VERNON — John David Fleisher, 75, of Mount Vernon, loving husband, brother, father and grandfather, passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, July 29, 2008.

Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Sullivan, Ind., to the late Earl F. Fleisher and Helen B. (Fugate) Fleisher. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Navy to serve aboard the USS Dortch during the Korean War. Upon his return, he attended General Motors Institute (Kettering University), graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1958. General Motors Allison Division employed him as a detail engineer in Indianapolis while he attended GMI. During that time, he wrote the book “The Machining Characteristics of Thermal Resistant Materials.” He married Barbara in August 1958 and they would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. Moving to California in 1960, he was a machine shop instructor at the California State Polytechnic and used his book as the textbook for his classes and worked for North American Aviation Autonetics Division as a supervisor of manufacturing methods. In 1966, he went to work for McDonnel-Douglas Mac Air Division in St. Louis, Mo., as the supervisor of manufacturing engineering. He retired from Cooper Energy Services (Rolls-Royce), Mount Vernon in 1991, where he was employed as a manager of manufacturing engineering for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. (Case) Fleisher of Mount Vernon; daughter, Christine (Kevin Davis) of New Albany; son, John F. (Lynda) and family, Ashley, Shelley, Lisa, Joel and Jonathon of Marysville; son, Robert (Tonya) and family, Justin, Wyatt and Hannah of Newark; son, Michael (Nicole) and family, Steven, Catie, Noah, Blake and Kristofer (deceased) of Powell; sister, JoAnne (Arturo) Rivera of Ellicott City, Md.; mother-in-law, Beulah M. Case of Owosso, Mich.; and cousins, James (Virginia) Fleisher of Alta Monti Springs, Fla., John Andrew Fugate of Peru, Ind., Michael (Sueellen) Schopmeyer of Brazil, Ind., Joel Schopmeyer of Plainfield, Ind., Gary (Martha) Schopmeyer of Greenville, Ind., Eric (Lori) Schopmeyer of Bloomington, Ind., and Ted (Reena) Slack of Brazil, Ind.

A caring cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, at 1 p.m. at Flowers-Synder Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. A private interment will take place at Cottage Hill Cemetery on later date in Brazil, Ind.
