William Griffin
MOUNT VERNON — Dr. William Griffin, 84, of Waters Edge Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born July 27, 1924, in Galt, Ontario, Canada, to the late John Griffin and Margaret Griffin Wolford. Dr. Griffin received a bachelor’s degree in theology from Northwest Nazarene University before receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Olivet Nazarene University in 1989. He was an ordained minister for the Church of the Nazarene serving in the pastorate for 40 years. Dr. Griffin served as assistant to the president for Mount Vernon Nazarene University from 1990 to 1997 and was ambassador-at-large for the university since that time. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret Elizabeth (Kissling) Griffin; two daughters, Carolyn (Austin) Swallow of Mount Vernon and Jeanette (Ron) McLean of Indianapolis, Ind.; a son, Gary Griffin of Bourbonnais, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Catherine (Hector) Agdeppa, Austin “Trey” (Carla) Swallow III, William Swallow, Luke (Sarah) McLean, Katie (Matt) Vaughan, Megan (Kyle) Stipp and Bonnie McLean; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Tyler Vaughan.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Friends may call on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 807 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon, OH 43050. A funeral service will be held at the church on Friday at 10 a.m. Dr. Rev. Mikel J. Norris will be officiating. A private entombment will take place in Washington Park Cemetery in Indianapolis, Ind., at a later date.
