Margaret Heighton

MOUNT VERNON — Margaret Ann (Oakes) “Maggie” Heighton, 77, of Rose Avenue, Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008.

She was born April 6, 1931, in Mount Vernon to Travis and Edna Mae (Graham) Oakes. Mrs. Heighton was an active member of the Civil Air Observation Corps during the Korean War; and she, along with her sister, Doris, reported aircraft flights over Mount Vernon to Air Control Center. She enjoyed roller skating at the South Vernon Roller Rink, collecting coins and stamps, and operating a CB radio with the Knox County CB Club. Maggie’s “handle” was “Acorn.” She was an active bowler in several local leagues, and a partner with her husband in collecting antique clocks. She enjoyed painting pastoral scenes with oils, and she was a whiz at cryptograms and crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed novels by the well-known author Nora Roberts. Margaret loved music, especially the Big Band and early ’50s eras, and was a student of astronomy, viewing evening stars through her telescope. She also actively pursued researching the genealogy of the Oakes family. She was a 1949 graduate of Mount Vernon High School.

She is survived by one sister, Doris (Oakes) McCrory of Mount Vernon; nieces and nephews, Bruce Alexander of Bellingham, Wash., Kenny Alexander of Williams, Ariz., Tina Call of Phoenix, Ariz., Diane Dove of Mount Vernon, Becky Fraser of Brandon, Fla., Sharon Jaramillo of Winslow, Ariz., Ed Oakes of Mount Vernon, Tommy Oakes of Mount Vernon and Nina Roberts of Tavares, Fla.; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friend and neighbor, Jackie Presley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry R. (Dick) Heighton; her parents; two sisters, Kathryn (Oakes) Yarman and Eleanor “Patsy” (Oakes) DeGrange; and three brothers, Harry Oakes, Edgar Oakes and Kenneth Oakes.

The funeral service was held at Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 20, with Dr. Paul D. Dove officiating. The burial service was held in Mound View Cemetery.
