Obituaries

MOUNT VERNON — Thelma A. Vernon, 90, of Melick Street, Mount Vernon, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 3, 2008, in the emergency room at Knox Community Hospital.

She was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Alliance, a daughter of the late Cleveland and Jenny (Specht) Luker. Thelma had worked for Shellmar in Mount Vernon and The Alcove Restaurant also in Mount Vernon as a cook. She was a member of the River of Life Fellowship in Mount Vernon. Thelma loved to play bingo and euchre. Her greatest enjoyment was watching her grandson’s sporting events.

Thelma is survived by her caring family, John (Lily) Young of Knoxville, Tenn., Linda Wright and Barbara Vernon, both of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill Specht of Live Oak, Fla., and Chuck, Jack, Henry and Louis Specht, all of Alliance; and sisters, Irene Doyle and Virginia Zoss, both of Alliance.

In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Vernon; son, James “Bob” Young; brother, Robert Specht; and sisters, Anna Mae Diehl, Ruth Korleski and Clara Warboy.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 4 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. Inurnment will be held at a late date in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
