MOUNT VERNON — Dorothy E. Harper, 86, of Newark Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
She was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Newark to the late William and Emma (Selegue) McMannis. Dorothy was of the Apostolic and Pentecostal faith and attended the Standard Church of Christ in Newark and the Apostolic Christian Church of Mount Vernon. She enjoyed reading her Bible, canning, cooking and taking care of her flowers, but most important was the quality time she spent with her friends and family.
She is survived by her children, a son, Jerry (Diane) Harper of Mount Vernon and his children, Jeff Harper, Steve (Mary) Harper, Andy (Nicole) Harper, a daughter, Deanna (Chick) Goehler and her children, Dave Stout, Craig Stout and Daysha Goehler, a son, Dan Harper and his children, Tonya (Brandon) Smith, Holly (Jason) Ramsey, Chad (Cassi) Harper, a daughter, Janet (Dewey) Caudill of Albany, Ill., and her children, Eli (Amanda) Harper and Zachary Caudill; 11 great-grandchildren, Jake, Kalin, Nathan, Matthew, Jaylen, Preston, Braeden, Abigail, Bryce, Gavin, Leland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Omar Harper; four brothers, Sam McMannis, Richard McMannis, Harry Darringer, Charles Darringer; and three sisters, Alta Belcher, Goldie Ferry and Edith Harper.
Friends may call on Monday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Revs. Chad Harper and Jason Ramsey will be officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.
