Helen Myers

MOUNT VERNON — Helen Bernice Marie (Williams) Myers, 97, departed this life after a brief illness on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Waterford on Nov. 7, 1910, to George Henry Washington Williams and Cyrinthia Ann (Johnson) Williams. She had resided in Mount Vernon for the last 65 years, except for a brief period when she lived in Newark. For the last 11 years she had been a resident at the Country Court Nursing Home in Mount Vernon.

Helen attended the local school systems in Waterford and Zanesville. Mother Myers was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon until the age of 85 years; when she was baptized in the precious name of Jesus at the King’s Temple in Marion in 1993. She recently attended the Apostolic Faith Church.

She had been employed by Dr. Bernard Weinstock and the Citizens Building Savings and Loan and had worked as a foster grandparent after her retirement. Helen had always wanted to be a nurse and took several nursing assistants and first aid classes. She was a member of the NAACP, serving on the executive board, Ben Carter Post 136 of the American Legion Auxiliary, 20th Century Club, a Daughter Elk of the Kokosing Elks Lodge 1085 and the Eastern Star.

Her interests included reading, listening to music, going to plays, eating out and football. She never hesitated putting her hand on the plow when her assistance was needed. She will be known for her quiet spirit, smile and hard work. Helen never complained and loved to praise the Lord. Her family and friends have richly benefited from her love and advice.

She leaves to cherish memories, three daughters, Shirley (James) Adams of Marion, Joyce (John) Hogan of Mount Vernon and Judith (Gary) Hill of Mount Vernon; a son, Hilbert O. (Tera Fraser) Myers Jr. of Mount Vernon; daughter-in-law, Karen Herndon of Mount Vernon; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Herndon; her second husband, Hilbert O. Myers Sr.; two brothers, George and Leroy; two sisters, Dorothy and Mary; and a son, Richard E. Herndon.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at noon at the Apostolic Faith Church, 801 W. High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050. Friends may call one hour prior. Elder Eddie Massey and Elder Tyrone Kaiser will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
