MOUNT VERNON — Elisabeth Ann Ballard Stone went home to be with her Lord on Nov. 13, 2008, at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon, Ohio. She was 87.
Born in Glen Jean, W.Va., Elisabeth lived most of her life in St. Albans, W.Va. She is survived by her loving husband of over 65 years, James Brodie Stone, formerly of St. Albans, W.Va. Also surviving Elisabeth are her four daughters, Bonnie and her husband, Lyman Russell of Landing, N.J.; Jean and her husband, Thomas Eckblad of Minneapolis, Minn.; Rosemary and her husband, Mervin Ziegler of Mount Vernon, Ohio; and Sarah and her husband, Rex Rogers of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Elisabeth is survived by 14 grandchildren, Lyman “Russ” Russell, James Brodie Russell, Joseph Russell, Thomas Eckblad, Luke Eckblad, Tracy Eckblad Mitchell, Cara Ziegler Schramm, William Ziegler, Gwen Ziegler Donehoo, Ruth Ziegler Lee, Elizabeth Rogers Drouillard, Eric Rogers, Andrew Rogers and Adam Rogers; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Elisabeth was a graduate of West Virginia University with a B.A. in English Literature. She was also a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., with a master’s degree.
Elisabeth taught many women’s Bible studies and encouraged children in Sunday School and Child Evangelism Fellowship Good News Clubs. She was an active member for many years in the KanAlban Garden Club of St. Albans; Daughters of the Confederacy; Daughters of the American Revolution; St. Albans Women’s Club; St. Albans Literary Club; and on the Board of Directors of the St. Albans Library. Elisabeth loved music and reading; wrote for the community newspaper; loved and wrote about her many flower gardens; and collected antiques.
Elisabeth was preceded in death by her parents, William and Blanche Ballard of Fayetteville, W.Va.; four brothers, William, Oscar, George and Lewis; three sisters, Sally Arritt, Hope Caldwell and Katherine Anderson; and her great-granddaughter, Hannah Mitchell.
Burial will be at Cunningham Memorial Park, 815 Cunningham Lane, St. Albans, W.Va., on Monday, Nov. 17, at 1:30 p.m. with her son-in-law, Dr. Mervin Ziegler, officiating.
Funeral arrangements are by the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon, Ohio.
