MOUNT VERNON — Areta M. Barkman, 89, of Fairway Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at Knox Community Hospital.
She was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Wood County, Ohio, to the late Roy and Alta (Whitacre) Aller. Areta was employed as a waitress at the Delft House in Toledo and retired from Toledo Hospital where she was a dietary supervisor. She was a member of the Walter Weller American Legion Auxiliary, the Eight and Forty organization, the Faith Lutheran Church here in Mount Vernon and the Augsburg Lutheran Church in Toledo. Areta enjoyed playing cards with her family and spending precious time with her great-granddaughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Hatton of Mount Vernon; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Jim) Moore and Leslie (Rocky Lane) Hatton; a great-granddaughter, Faith Heather Moore; her sister, Jeanne Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Areta was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene M. Barkman; a granddaughter, Heather Marie Hatton; three sisters, Donna Bohannon, Kathryn Erney and Elda Peltier; three brothers, William Aller, Fred Aller and Porter D. “Jim” Aller; and a dear friend, Sylvia Senkel.
There will be no calling hours. A service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Mausoleum of Toledo Memorial Park with the Rev. Mark Wildermuth officiating. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Areta M. Barkman Family.
