GAMBIER — Clarence L. Newton, 85, of Gambier passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 15, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Clarence “Newt” was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Mount Vernon, oldest son of the late Elmer and Elizabeth (Earl) Newton Sr. Clarence was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. Clarence enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing poker with family and friends. Clarence will be remembered as being a great man, devoted to his country, his family and a father figure to many.

Clarence is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ellen Joan (Frey) Newton, whom he married Feb. 4, 1950; his caring children, Jeffrey Louis (Robin Wheatley) Newton of Cambridge, Mass., Marsha Leigh (Mark) Phillips of Mount Vernon, Stephen Dale Newton of Upper Arlington, Richard Lee (Elizabeth) Newton of Huron, Timothy Allan Newton of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas Patrick (Karen) Newton of Lorain; grandchildren, Shawn William Phillips, Michael Newton Phillips, Stephen Newton Phillips, Stephanie Marie Newton, Cheri Leigh Newton Rine, Ruben James Newton, Laura Christina Newton, Kathryn Marie Newton and Kimberly Elise Newton; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl (Ann) Newton of Fredericktown, Elmer (Pat) Newton Jr. of Mount Vernon, and Donald Newton of Mount Vernon; sisters, Mary Hartsook of Mount Vernon, Patricia Lane of Chesterville, Nancy Beeman of Mount Vernon and Ada Clawson of Mount Vernon.

In addition to his parents, Clarence was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Clyde and Dennis Newton.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service, celebrating the life of Clarence, Sunday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. The Knox County Joint Veterans Council will provide military honors at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital, 1330 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
