MOUNT VERNON — George H. Christman Jr., 72, of Briar Wood Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at MedCentral in Mansfield.

He was born Nov. 12, 1936, in North Olmsted, Ohio, to the late George and Esther (George) Christman Sr. George graduated from North Olmsted High School and received his bachelor’s degree in education from Kent State University. He later received his master’s degree in education with a minor in physical education and health education from Bowling Green State University. George worked as head trainer for Kenyon College for 36 years and was a Certified Athletic Trainer and Massage Therapist. He was inducted into the Ohio Trainers Hall of Fame at Ohio University and the Kenyon College Hall of Fame (2007). George was well known for expanding his role of trainer to take on a “more holistic viewpoint.” It was said, “The core characteristic of George is that he wants to help people.”

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Charlotte (Robinson) Christman; three daughters, Cheryl (Gary) Taylor of Columbus, Nancy Yandle of Meridian, Idaho, and Sue (Robert) Willing of Delaware, Ohio; six grandchildren, Amy (Kelly) Hannum, Sarah (Derek) Eggert, Bethany (Alberto) SotoAlvarez, Erin Pitkin, Robby Willing and Justin Willing; four great-grandchildren, Logan and Kassidy Eggert, Everett and Analiese Hannum; a brother, Robert (Maryann) Christman of North Olmsted; and sisters, Jenny Bierman of North Olmsted and Marilyn (Kent) Adams of North Ridgeville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
