WALHONDING — Alfred Mason, 98, of Walhonding Route, departed this life on earth Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 17, 1910, in Newells Run, Ohio (Washington County) to the late Sherman and Laura (Remele) Mason. He graduated from West Carlisle High School in 1928 and Frazeysburg High School in 1929 as valedictorian. He was a member of the New Guilford United Methodist Church. He retired from the Preston Oil Co., was on the Union School Board of Education and was a member of the school board when the new River View School District was formed and the high school was built. He served as a member of the Coshocton County Republican Central Committee for 43 years, and was a member of the Coshocton County Board of Elections. He served on the Coshocton County Fair Board for 20 years. He was a member of Wakatomica Lodge 108 F&AM, Glenwood Chapter 303 OES of Bladensburg, York Rite Bodies of Coshocton and was a Knight of the York Cross of Honour for over 50 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Jean Anne (Harold) Armstrong of Bridgewater, Va.; a son, Don Raymond (Ruth Ann) Mason of Warsaw; two grandchildren, Brian Scott (Tammy) Mason and Nicole Dawn (Ezra) Helmick; great-grandchildren, Ashley Nicole and Joshua Andrew Mason, Grant Jeffery and Ross Mason Gunn; and a sister, Twila (Mason) Asire of Kelseyville, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Grace (Babcock) Mason, whom he married Sept. 28, 1937. She died April 8, 2005.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw with Pastors Tim Thomas and Robert Millspaugh officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Warsaw.
