MOUNT VERNON — Ethel B. Bakewell, 79, of Howard Street, Mount Vernon, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
She was born May 15, 1930, in Akron to the late George and Ethel (Kollar) Barta. She was a graduate of Springfield High School and Akron University where she received her degree in physical education. Ethel loved to bake and participated in the Farm Market held in Mount Vernon square. She was a member of the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene where she was active in Prime Time. Ethel was supportive of Missions, Mount Vernon Nazarene University basketball and was a lifelong Cleveland Indian and Browns fan.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Bakewell of Mount Vernon; two sons, George (Deb) Bakewell of Mount Vernon and Brian (Fay) Bakewell of Snellville, Ga.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Ann (Edward) Schollenberg of Anchor Point, Alaska, and Georgia Ann Greenman of Doylestown, Ohio.
Besides her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bakewell.
Friends may call on Sunday, May 24, at the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene Chapel from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. A service will be held on Monday, at the Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene Sanctuary beginning at 2 p.m. with Pastor Larry White officiating. The family will observe a private graveside service at a later date. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Ethel B. Bakewell.
