CENTERBURG — Henry Alexander Baldwin, 87, of Centerburg, passed away Monday, June 1, 2009, at Woodside Nursing Center in Mount Gilead.
Henry was born May 31, 1922, in Bandy, Va., to Sarah McGuire and Joseph Martin Baldwin. He was married to Hazel Jeanette Wright on Nov. 12, 1942, in Baltimore, Md. He worked there as a ship builder during the early part of World War II before joining the Army and serving in Scotland and England with the 6th Medical Depot Company until the end of the war. He retired from Rancho, Delaware, Ohio, after 35 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, pitching horseshoes and working jigsaw puzzles. He loved to tease and joke with people and was especially fond of doing so with the waitresses at Farmstead and his caregivers at Woodside. He loved his children dearly and delighted in his grandchildren. The grandchildren reciprocated his feelings and thought the world of their grandfather.
Surviving are his daughters, Henrietta (Van) Olnhausen of Marietta, Jane (Jack) Edgell and Bonnie (Mark) Daily of Cardington, Judith (Bill) Brooks of Marengo; son, Dan Baldwin of Cambridge; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was very fond of his special caregiver, Michelle DeWitt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel; grandson, Daniel; great-granddaughter, Syndi; brother; Paul Baldwin; sister, Laura; an infant brother, Elgin; and an infant sister, Ellia.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Melick-Moreland Funeral Home, 49 W. Church St., Centerburg, where service will be Thursday, June 4, at 11 a.m. Pastor Darryle Moody will officiate. Interment will be in Bloomfield Cemetery.
