CENTERBURG — Audrey June Sammetinger, 87, died June 7, 2009, at her home in Centerburg.
She was born Aug. 18, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., to Edward and Clara Goyer. She served her country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. She met her future husband, Lt. C.E. Sammetinger, when both were stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa. They were married 39 years until Sam’s passing in 1985 and had made their home in Centerburg since 1949. She attended Otterbein College. Audrey was a dedicated community volunteer. She served on the board of the Centerburg Public Library and was active in the Knox County Humane Society, March of Dimes and American Red Cross blood program. She was a member of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. She taught Sunday School at Grace Lutheran Church in Centerburg and Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Condit. For many years, Audrey collected personal new notes for The Centerburg Gazette, which the family owned from 1960 to 1973.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother and sister.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sara Hammond and David Fales of Tucson, Ariz.; and nephew, Robert Gilmore of Michigan.

A private burial service was held at Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg. A service to celebrate Audrey’s life will be held Wednesday, June 10, at 11 a.m. at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 15370 Meredith State Road, Condit, Ohio. Arrangements are by the Johnson-Melick-Moreland Funeral Home, Centerburg.\
