MOUNT VERNON — John Madias Jr., 83, of East Ohio Avenue, Mount Vernon, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Greece to the late John and Agnes (Mason) Madias Sr. John served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and had an extensive collection of baseball cards and coins. John retired in 1990 after 28 years of employment with Continental Can Co. in Mount Vernon.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Doug) Swihart of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Preston, Angelica, Alexis, Todd, Raymond, Tina and Becky; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Nick (Freda) Madias of Fredericktown; two sisters, Rena Scarvelis of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Mary (Steve) Facaros of Stockton, Calif.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Madias; and a stepson, Charles Highman.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619, E. High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050, where a funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
