Darwin D. Daniels

MOUNT VERNON — Darwin D. Daniels, 89, of Mount Vernon passed away Tuesday morning, June 23, 2009, at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon.

He was born Aug. 22, 1919, in Knox County, a son of the late Arthur E. and Ida B. (Smith) Daniels. Darwin was a 1938 graduate of the Amity High School and a lifetime member of the Amity United Methodist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre for 39 months. During his service in World War II, Darwin received two Bronze Stars. Darwin, along with his wife, Betty owned and operated Sugar Row Dairy farm north of Mount Vernon for many years. Darwin was a member of the State and National Ayrshire Breeders Association, the Farm Bureau, the Grange, the Ohio State University Extension Advisory Committee for over 40 years, the N.R.A., and the American Legion. He was the former director of the Knox Soil & Conservation District, the Farmers Exchange, was a 4-H club leader for over 12 years and was an avid hunter.

Darwin is survived by his loving wife, Betty (Hays) Daniels, whom he married on May 18, 1947; a son, Larry (Judie) Daniels of North Carolina; a daughter, Linda (Dick) McCluskey of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Dawn Daniels, Beth (Jed) Acker, Cathy (Tyler) Yoder, Dana Daniels, Rahn (Cindy) McCluskey and Sean McCluskey; great-grandchildren, Maggie, Breanna and Kiteley McCluskey, and Joy and Lucy Acker.

In addition to his parents, Darwin was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan Kelly; and his sister, Ruth Palmer.

The family will receive friends at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, on Friday from noon until time of a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Brother Philip McMurrin officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in the Union Grove Cemetery near Gambier.
