MOUNT VERNON — Joanne Bumpus, 73, formerly of 3 Nuce Road in Mount Vernon, died July 21, 2009, surrounded by her family at The Laurels of Mount Vernon.
She was born Dec. 25, 1935, in Danville to the late Alfred and Coletta (Shults) Durbin. Joanne was a 1953 Danville High School graduate, founding member of TOPS OH 2093 in Mount Vernon and TOPS OH 393 in Mount Vernon where she held many offices from 1980-2005. She bowled in many leagues at Tilden Lanes, Charger Lanes, Mount Vernon Lanes, Colonial City Lanes and Trio Lanes. Joanne was also a coach and secretary for the Saturday Morning Junior League. Over her years she had worked as a secretary for Community Garbage Services, Ross Brothers and American Disposal Co. She was also a cook for St. Vincent de Paul School and worked for the Chattanooga Glass Co.
Joanne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mitch and Lori Bumpus of Mount Vernon; stepdaughter, Melissa (Allen) Dexter; brother, Charles (special friend, Greta Banbury) Durbin, both of Mount Vernon; her loving granddaughter, Danielle Lynn Bumpus; sister-in-law, Vennie Durbin, and a brother-in-law, George Bumpus, all of Mount Vernon; her dogs, Mr. Peanut and Oreo; and her cat, Gimpy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bumpus in 1982; brothers, Rev. Sam Durbin and J.R. “Bob” Durbin; brother-in-law, Dwight Bumpus; sisters-in-law, Mary Durbin, Miriam “Polly” Bumpus and Julia Bumpus.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark J. Hammond as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
