MOUNT VERNON — Charles Burgess Shaffer, 67, of Mount Vernon died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Charles was born Jan. 13, 1942, in Mount Vernon to Paul F. Shaffer and Alice (Jacobs) Smith. He was a graduate of Howard High School and served with the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961. Charles had been employed as a welder for Cooper Energy Services and Rolls Royce Corp. in Mount Vernon. Charles was a member of the Mount Vernon Baptist Temple and was a former member of the Centerburg Conservation Club.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda (Carr) Shaffer; his children, Whitney (Mark) Shaffer Maynard of Mount Vernon, Sherry (Tony) Canon of Toledo, Jason Shaffer of Mount Vernon and John Ekleberry of Toledo; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; his brothers, John (Carolyn) Shaffer of Fredericktown, Stanley Shaffer and Max Smith, both of Mount Vernon; and his sister, Brenda (John Paques) Humphrey of Mount Vernon.
Besides his parents Charles was preceded in death by his son, Chad Burgess Shaffer; and a brother, Eldon Shaffer.
Friends may call Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, where funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m., with Pastor Bill Finnell officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
