MOUNT VERNON — Charles W. Tier, 85, of Mount Vernon died July 26, 2009, at the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Howard to the late Fred G. and Mary Etta (McKinzie) Tier. Charles retired in 1979 from Continental Can after 37 years of service. He was also a former baseball coach for the Federal Little League.
He is survived by his sons, Mike (Cathy) Tier of Mount Vernon and David Tier of Warner Robbins, Ga.; daughter, Sharon Short of Mount Vernon; sisters, Millie Collins of Mount Vernon and Barb (Harold) Koelbl of Reynoldsburg; granddaughters, Julie Long, Angie Tier and Rosemary Short; grandson, Charles Young; great-grandchildren, Misty, Jerry Lee, Samantha, Ryan, Cory and Aaron; and very special friend, Ester Leveson of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie M. Tier; brothers, Harry, Walter, George and Fred Tier; and sisters, Bertha Hull, Martha Durbin, Nellie Dotson and Agnes Hurps.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. Friends may call Wednesday from noon until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
