HOWARD — George H. Burritt, 80, of Howard died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
George was born Oct. 5, 1928, at Bradford, Pa., to Harry E. and Frances (Jones) Burritt. He graduated from Cochranton High School in Cochranton, Pa., and Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He and his wife owned and operated the Hilltop Carry Out in Mount Vernon from 1979 until 2002. George attended the Gay Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. He was a member of the Middlebury Grange and was a former member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon.
George was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family and took pride in all their accomplishments.
Surviving are his wife, Ida J. (Bell) Burritt, whom he married March 10, 1956; his daughters, Cynthia (Dana) Harper of Fredericktown and Georgette Burritt of Mount Vernon; his sons, Harry (Stephanie) Burritt of Houston, Texas, Bob (Susanne) Burritt of Bellbrook, Ohio, and Don (Katie) Burritt of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Burritt Wells, Devin Burritt, Demeris Burritt, Tatum Burritt, Jennifer Burritt, Austin Burritt, Alyssa Burritt and Jack Burritt; two great-grandchildren, Danielle Wells and Colton Wells. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Keith Bohley officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Southlawn Cemetery in Utica.
