MOUNT VERNON — Clarence Daniel “Danny” Burwell, 76, Mount Vernon went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 16, 2009, surrounded by his family.
He leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Marna (Chesser) Burwell; children, Beverly (Ed) Hartung of Sandusky, Rick (Tina) Burwell of Condit, Randy (Becki) Burwell of Westerville, Tom (Bonnie) Loper of Degraff, Linda (Bruce) Young of Sunbury, Dari (Herby) Romero of Texas and Sean (Michelle) Johnson of Centerburg. Also surviving are sisters, Rachel Barrow and Joann (Robert) Smith of Minerva Park, and Bernie (Gene) Williams of Lutz, Fla.; grandchildren, Jason Hartung, Lindsey Sturzinger, Brett Burwell, Travis Burwell, Alex Burwell, Jessica Cotton, Jeffrey Cotton, Kim Loper, Tina Loper, Laura Sclesky and Donnie Johnson; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by infant daughter and son, Cindy and Steven; parents, Fen and Wilda Burwell; brothers, Ernest, Carl and Earl Burwell; and sisters, Thelma Hard, Mary Herder, Mildred Timson and Betty Homer.
Dan was raised in Minerva Park and was a graduate of Westerville High School, class of ’52, where he was all-state in football and referred to as “Mr. Westerville” in sports leadership circles. He worked in construction, was a master brick mason and a custom sulky cart craftsman, supplying professional racers nationally. In his retirement he worked for the Mount Vernon City School system. He was also a proud member of the Seniors Softball League in Columbus and Mount Vernon. Dan and Marna are members of the Gay Street United Methodist Church.
Most will remember Dan for his quick smile and laughter, his willingness to help anyone at anytime, and his dedication to his family, especially to his grandchildren and their sports and activities. We rejoice that he is home with the Lord, but he will be greatly missed because he loved us so well.
A celebration of his life will be held Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon. Dr. David Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Donations may be made to the Gay Street United Methodist Church in his memory.
True to his spirit of caring and helpfulness, Dan requested that his body be donated to the OSU College of Medicine.
