Loran Monk

MOUNT VERNON — Rev. Loran Monk, 68, of Mount Vernon died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at the Newark Health Care Center with family at his bedside.

Loran was born Feb. 12, 1941, in Honaker, Va., to Robert Owens Monk and Ida Bell (Breeding) Monk and moved to Mount Vernon with his family in 1956. He was a 1959 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and participated on the Yellow Jackets basketball team while in high school. He served with the U.S. Army and was employed at Lamb Glass and Chattanooga Glass companies in Mount Vernon for 22 years. Loran became a licensed minister with United Pentecostal Church International of Hazelwood, Mo., and he founded the United Pentecostal Church in Mount Gilead, which he pastored from 1978 until he retired in 1982.

Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, Patricia (Shanabrook) Monk; two stepchildren, Tonya Quinlin of Apopka, Fla., and John Grennell of Mount Vernon; two adopted children, the Rev. Daniel L. Monk of Hebron and James M. Monk of Zatzuma, Fla.; nine stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gaynell Erlanger of Byron Center, Mich., and Janice Richards of Springfield, Ill.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his aunt, Flossie Monk, of The Laurels of Mount Vernon.

Funeral services honoring the life of the Rev. Loran Monk and giving glory to God will be Monday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church, Old Delaware Road, Mount Vernon, with Don Mann, the Rev. Daniel L. Monk and the Rev. Duane Kramer officiating. Entombment with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the funeral service.
