MOUNT VERNON — Richard W. Wallace, 88, of Mount Vernon died Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at the Summerville at HillenVale.
Richard was born Aug. 28, 1921, at Marietta to Henry and Nellie (Strickland) Wallace. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific for three years during World War II. Richard retired from United Telephone Co. in 1980 after 38 years of employment. Following his retirement, Richard served as maintenance director at the Beech Tree Apartments in Mount Vernon. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mount Vernon.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Bunn) Wallace, whom he married March 23, 1947; his son, Stephen Ray (Cathie) Wallace of Mount Vernon; his daughters, Karen (Butch McNeil) Kreps and Geri Wallace, both of Mount Vernon, and Leigh Ann Bruno of Hilliard; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Juanita Wynn of Marietta.
Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a sister, Erma Giffin; and two brothers, Vincent Wallace and Emmett Wallace.
Friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Hendrix officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
