MOUNT VERNON — Foster L. Sanders, 78, of Mount Vernon died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at his residence.
Foster was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Floyd County, Ky., to Elbert A. and Alice M. (Elam) Sanders. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953 and was a retired coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy O. (Compton) Sanders, whom he married April 16, 1951; his daughters and son-in-law, Alice and Dr. Bradlee Spence of Fredericktown and Patricia Woodring of Howard; his sons and daughters-in-law, Curtis and Amy Sanders of Howard, and Garcil and Nancy Sanders of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Gene Smith of Jolo, W.Va.; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Ann Sanders of Bobwhite, W.Va., Junior and Janice Rowe of Jolo, W.Va., and Billy and Clearcy Sanders of Cotton Patch, S.C.
Besides his parents, Foster was preceded in death by his brother, Beacher Sanders; and a sister, Imagean Smith.
A graveside funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens mausoleum. Pastor Duane Kramer will be officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
