MOUNT VERNON — Caroline M. Schermerhorn, 44, of Mount Vernon passed away Friday morning, Sept. 11, 2009, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born March 12, 1965, in Fort Worth, Texas, a daughter of William and Marian (Vriessen) Stansberry of Brevard, N.C. Caroline was a freelance writer and had many columns published in local newspapers and magazines. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, where she designed and coordinated the Vacation Bible School Program. Caroline was an Encountered member of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter and with her husband, Kelly, were Encounter Leaders for several years with the local group.
In addition to her parents, Caroline is survived by her husband, Kelly V. Schermerhorn, whom she married on May 2, 1987; sons, Patrick J. and Jacob L. Schermerhorn, both of the home; daughters, Teresa M. Schermerhorn of Ashland, Elizabeth A. Schermerhorn, Catherine M. Schermerhorn and Veronica A. Schermerhorn, all of the home; brothers, Jim (Sheril) Stansberry of Orlando, Fla., Chris (Aziza) Stansberry of Pickens, S.C., Bill (Joyce) Stansberry of Sanford, Fla., and Mike (Alison) Stansberry of Saint Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday, Sept. 14, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, with a vigil service at 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
