MOUNT VERNON — John Joseph Mund, 84, of Newark Road, Mount Vernon, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
He was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Saint Cloud, Minn., to the late Joseph and Alvina (Klein) Mund. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korean War and the beginning of Vietnam. He retired as chief petty officer in 1963 after 20 years of service to his country. He also retired from Baxter Laboratory in Deerfield, Ill. John enjoyed reading anything involving the history of our country, completing crossword puzzles and playing cribbage with family and friends. He was a member of AMVETS Post 95 in Mount Vernon and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in McHenry, Ill.
He is survived by two sons, Omer “Chic” (Dee) Goehler of Mount Vernon and John J. Mund Jr. of Oklahoma; two daughters, Jana Dee (Oscar) Medinger of La Mesa, Calif., and Ruth Ann Mund; four grandchildren, Daysha Goehler, Dave Stout, Craig Stout and Chris Flores; three brothers, William Mund of Minnesota, Joseph Mund of New York and Ronald Mund of Illinois; two sisters, Dorraine Sigwanz of New Jersey and Donna Toia of New York; God child, Joann Bratland of Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Toby” Mund; and four brothers, Richard, Ervin, Duane and Robert Mund.
Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050, where a military service provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at 7 p.m.
