MOUNT VERNON — Donald P. Mavis, 82, of Mount Vernon died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Donald was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Howard to Frank and Laura (Beckholt) Mavis and had spent his lifetime in the Knox County area. He was retired from the Continental Can Co. Donald was a member of the First Church of God on Pine Street, the Knox County Coon Hunters Association and the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon. Besides being an avid coon hunter, Don loved spending time with his family and friends and playing cards.
Surviving are his daughters, Pamela (Jeffrey) Sperling of Westerville and Dona (James) Burgess of Mount Vernon; four grandchildren Scott Sperling, Heidi Coffee, Ryan Burgess and Curtis Burgess; two great-grandchildren, Luke Sperling and Sam Sperling; his sister, Betty Mills of Millwood; sister-in-law, Evelyn Mavis of Howard; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jean Bostick.
Besides his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Martina (Mawer) Mavis; his brother, Robert Mavis; and two half sisters, Lula Finn and Edith Stewart.
Friends may call Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the First Church of God, 10 Pine St., Mount Vernon, with the Rev. William Fulda officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
