BELLVILLE — Jacob “Jake” Frederick Sr. passed away Oct. 8, 2009, at his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 15, 1929, to Martin and Sophia (Shyrick) Frederick. He lived in Hastings, before moving to Mansfield. He attended Lucas Schools and Mansfield Senior High.
Jake married the love of his life Marie (Goon) on June 17, 1949. They recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he was a sergeant and assigned on the C-119 while overseas during the Korean War and also while in Florida. Living in Texas, Illinois, New Jersey and Florida, after the service they moved to Ontario, where he worked at the Ohio Brass Co. for 10 years.
They have made their home in Bellville for the past 46 years. While living in Bellville, Jake owned and operated Frederick Siding Co. for 46 years, retiring in 1999. He attended the First Nazarene Church in Mansfield and while in Florida they attended the Lutheran Church in Bartow.
Jake was in several organizations, such as Little League Lions Club and built the First Lions Club popcorn trailer. He was a Past Master of the Bellville Lodge 376, member of Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, member of Mansfield Chapter 28, Mansfield Council 94, Mansfield Commandery 21, member Baku Grotto and was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He was also a member of Bellville Eastern Star 291 and was the 1995 Past Worthy Grand Patron for the Order of Eastern Star for the State of Ohio. Jake served on many committees statewide and held a membership in the Mansfield Ruth Chapter 17. He was also a member of the former Grotto Campers.
He and Marie have traveled the United States, visiting all but one state. In 1992 made Fort Meade, Fla., their winter home. He was a past member of Pen-Ohio Model A Club, The Mustang Club and The Corvette Club. Jake has had many old cars, but his prized possession was his 1954 Ford that he proudly restored himself. He took them to many car shows and won a few trophies. His love in life was his family and he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Jake is survived by his wife, Marie of Bellville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jake and Cheryl Frederick Jr. of Mount Vernon; granddaughters, Augusta Frederick of Bellville and Amanda (Frederick) and Jason Smith of St. Clairsville, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Aaron Frederick and Allison Frederick of Bellville and Isabella Smith of St. Clairsville; numerous nieces and nephews; and several step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by sisters, Lena Mergle, Elizabeth Hartung, Eva Hubner, Mary Wyrick; and brothers, John, Tony and Steve Frederick.
The Frederick family will receive friends Sunday, Oct. 11, from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where Masonic and Eastern Star memorial services will immediately follow. Funeral service will be Monday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery where American Legion Post 535 will hold graveside military honors. Following graveside services a luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville, located at 48 Church St., Bellville, OH 44813.
