MOUNT VERNON — Ruth Lenore Warden, 95, of Mount Vernon passed away Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home, Mount Vernon, where she had been a resident since October 2007.
She was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, to Harry K. and Neva (Tuckerman) Walter. Her family moved to northern Ohio when she was an infant. She graduated as salutatorian from Clyde High School in 1932 and came to Mount Vernon in 1936. She resided with her aunt and uncle, Pearl and Emmett Hull, and went to work at Shellmar. At work she met Frank Warden, whom she married on May 27, 1939. She joined St. Vincent de Paul Church in the middle 1950s. Beginning in 1952, she worked as a nurses’ aide, practical nurse, then intensive care nurse at Mercy Hospital from 1952 through 1977. Ruth was the first certificated coronary care technician in the state of Ohio. She retired from Mercy Hospital after 25 years of employment.
Ruth was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and loved to read and play Scrabble.
She is survived by her children, Judith (Roger) Keck of Newark, James (Karen) Warden of Pleasant Lake, Mich., and Susan (Thomas) Hayes of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Robert (Laura) Mayer of Oro Valley, Ariz., Michele Mayer of Newark, Thomas (Kirsten) Hayes of Cleveland Heights, Matthew Hayes of Alexandria, Va., Wendy (Scott) Martin of Dexter, Mich., and Michael (Mindy) Warden of Ypsilanti, Mich.. Ruth has lucky 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Reagh of Mount Vernon, as well as brothers, Woody (Jo) Walter of Spearsville, Kan., and Robert (Naoma) Walter of Fort Wayne, Ind.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Frank Warden, who died in 2003; her granddaughter, Gail Mayer McMorris, as well as four sisters and a brother.
Friends may call Monday, Oct. 26, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Mount Vernon.
