GERRY, N.Y. — Dr. A. Walter Kaufmann, 85, of Heritage Village, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at the Rehab and Skilled Nursing Facility.

Born Feb. 21, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Albert and Wynona Aiken Kaufmann. A graduate of Cleveland Schools he was also graduated from Greenville College, Greenville, Ill., with a BS in mathematics and his master’s and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

A Christian educator most of his life, Dr. Kaufmann was a professor at The Ohio State University, Roberts Wesleyan College, where he had also served as Academic Dean and Mount Vernon Nazarene University, retiring in 1981.

A member of the Gerry Free Methodist Church, Dr. Kaufmann was previously active on various boards and committees in the Genesee Conference of the Free Methodist Church including pastoral appointments.

He enjoyed woodworking and building houses.

Husband of 64 years to Shirley Rogers Kaufmann, whom he married March 21, 1946; father of, Lon Kaufmann of Bahrain, Kathy (Rev. Nathan) Prouty of Baltimore, Md., Greg Kaufmann of Schenectady; grandfather of seven; great-grandfather of seven. Also survived by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Gerry Free Methodist Church, 4500 Church St., Gerry, N.Y. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at church. Burial in Gerry Cemetery.
