MOUNT VERNON — L. Wayne Meekins, 91, of Mount Vernon died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born in Knox County on Nov. 22, 1917, a son of the late James and Effie (Bailey) Meekins. Wayne was a graduate of Fredericktown High School and lived and worked his entire lifetime in Knox County. Wayne retired in 1981 from the Mount Vernon Water Treatment Plant after 25 years of faithful service.
Wayne is survived by his devoted wife of over 27 years, Marie (Street) Meekins; a son, Dennis (Bonnie) Meekins of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Norma Jean (David) Gee of Ridgecrest, Calif.; two daughters-in-law, Beverly Meekins of Fredericktown and Rosemary Henley of Lagrange, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Stiltner of Columbus and Judy N. Harper of Grove City; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Evelyn (Burdine) Meekins; sons, Gerald Meekins and Gordon Henley; stepson, Stuart Harper; a brother, Kenneth Meekins; and a sister, Irene Cutler.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Flowers–Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. A graveside service will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
