MOUNT VERNON — Donald Lester “Smitty” Smith, 81, of Lower Fredericktown-Amity Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his residence following declining health.

Donald was born April 3, 1928, in Knox County to George and Byrdetta (Dodd) Smith, graduated from Mount Vernon High School and had spent his lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. He had been a self-employed carpenter, with his father, for 15 years and had worked for the Mount Vernon City Schools for 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fredericktown, had served as a Scoutmaster for the local Cub Scouts. He was an avid carpenter and woodworker.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie J. (Griggs) Smith, whom he married Dec. 10, 1949; son, George (Karen) Smith of Howard; daughters, Carolyn (Gary) McKelvey of Glenmont and Connie (Ed) Cieslak of Mansfield; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Donald was preceded in death by a son, Donald L. Smith II; grandson, William Horn; and sisters, Pauline Smith and Goldie Rozewicz.

Friends may call Friday, Nov. 13, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. His nephew, the Rev. John Rozewicz, will officiate. Burial will follow at Mound View Cemetery.
