MOUNT VERNON — Dorma M. Warrick, 89, passed away Monday night, Dec. 13, 2009, at Whispering Hills Care Center, where she had lived since 2003. A longtime resident of Mount Vernon, she had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years.

She was born Sept. 13, 1920, in a little log house in Big Otter, W.Va., to Grace Sutton and Oley Eubank. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Akron, Ohio, where she excelled in school and played basketball in spite of her short stature. She met her husband, John Warrick while studying English at Manchester College in Indiana. They were married in 1943 after John completed his Naval Ensign training and just before he was shipped overseas.

After several years living in Minerva, Ohio, the Warrick family moved to Mount Vernon when John was offered a position as a teacher and coach at the high school and then later became principal of Pleasant Street School. Dorma taught business subjects at Mount Vernon High for many years and considered it “not a job, but a way of life.” She was active in the Mulberry Street Methodist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school and leading Bible studies. After retirement, she and John spent many winters in Clearwater, Fla., where she took up golf and edited her retirement center newsletter.

She is survived by her brother, Binford Eubank of Sebring, Ohio; one daughter, Jo Forkish of Sunnyvale, Calif.; three sons, David of Wooster, Doug of Salt Lake City and Michael of Brighton, Mich. She also has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her devoted husband John preceded her in death in 2004, after 60 years of happy marriage.

A celebration of life will be held at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the Warrick family.
