CENTERBURG — Robert L. Whited, 88, of Centerburg passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009.

He retired from PPG in Mount Vernon after 32 years. He was a Centerburg resident since 1945, where he served as fire chief for Hilliar Township Volunteer Department for 24 years and was honored this past May by the Central Ohio Joint Fire District. He also was a member and involved in various activities which included Boy Scout leader, Hilliar Township trustee, the American Legion in Centerburg, 50-year member of Bloomfield Lodge F&AM in Centerburg and member of Centerburg Conservation Club. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shelley Whited; parents, Tom and Ollie Whited; and sister, Marie Dalby.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Virgie; son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Judy Whited of Centerburg; daughter and son-in-law, Bobbi and Doug Davis of Brandon, Fla.; grandchildren, Brian (Jennifer) Davis of Lakeland, Fla., and Carey (Brett) Ballinger of Centerburg; great-grandchildren, Austin Davis and Jackson Ballinger; sister, Irene Smith of Virginia; a brother, Bruce (Joan) Whited of Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Melick-Moreland Funeral Home, 49 W. Church St., Centerburg. Graveside service and burial will be held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. in Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg.
