MOUNT VERNON — Russell Burl Carr, 82, of Mount Vernon passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after a brief illness.
He was born May 17, 1927, in Shreve, a son of the late Edward R. and Beulah LeMaster Carr. Russ graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1946 and served in the Army Air Corps. After his service to his country, Russ married Norene Harley on Feb. 11, 1950, living in Mansfield for 36 years and more recently in Mount Vernon for 12 years. An owner/operator of many businesses in his life, including gas stations in Galion and Mansfield, he retired at the young age of 79 after owning and operating Porcelite of Mansfield for 20 years. Russ also worked for Powell Supply for 10 years. A longtime member of Park Avenue Baptist Church in Mansfield, he was most recently a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, where he enjoying singing in the choir and volunteering along side his wife. He sang tenor for over 20 years with the Mansfield Choral Society. Russ also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and traveling with Norene.
Russ is survived by his wife, Norene (Harley) Carr; his children, Gregory (Nancy) Carr of Mansfield, James (Tisha) Carr of Columbus, Karen (Tom) Baker of Columbus, Julie (Kevin) Oswalt of Mansfield and Susan (Doug) Mill of Newark; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, Russ was preceded in death by daughters, Connie and Cindy Carr and Lisa Carr Boggs; a granddaughter, Hannah Oswalt; and a brother, Lawrence Carr.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 29, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bob Hendrix officiating. Burial will follow in the Mound View Cemetery, Mount Vernon, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
