NEWARK — A funeral service for Electa M. Gunther, 78, formerly of Newark, will be Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service. Pastor Tom Olson and Ralph Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Gunther died Dec. 30, 2009 at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
She was born Jan. 28, 1931, in Newark to the late Ivan M. and Helen Elma (Downey) Roberts. Mrs. Gunther was a 1950 graduate of Newark High School. She retired from Rockwell International where she had been employed for 30 years as a switchboard operator and receptionist. Mrs. Gunther was a baptized member of First Presbyterian Church in Newark and attended St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 305 and the ladies section of the Newark Maennerchor. She enjoyed playing cards. Her gracious hospitality and dinners were extended to many clubs and organizations as well as family and friends.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Deborah Lange of Mount Vernon; brother, Jerry (Helen) Roberts of Zephyrhills, Fla.; stepdaughters, Joyce M. Gunther of Saint Petersburg, Fla., and Tess Philipps (J.R.) Gaines of Westerville; grandson, David Philipps-Moses; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Philip Gunther, who died July 23, 2008; and a stepson, John Philip Gunther Jr.
Friends may call Sunday, Jan. 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home, 59 N. Fifth St., Newark.
