MOUNT VERNON — Helen Richards Smith, 85, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Rochester, N.Y., died Jan. 5, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born June 28, 1924, in Honeoye Falls, N.Y., as the daughter of the late George Burt and Bernice (Allen) Richards.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Janet (Richard) Kettell of Mount Vernon; her son, George (Georgia) Smith of Rochester, N.Y.; brother, Gerald (Sandy) Richards of Chili, N.Y.; sister, Rita (Lysle) Richardson of Perry, N.Y.; three grandchildren of Mount Vernon, Brian (Sarah) Kettell, Jeffrey (Krystal) Kettell and Sarah (John) Tilton, and five grandchildren of New York; a great-granddaughter, Kallan Tilton, who knew Helen as “Super Grandma”, and 10 more great-grandchildren of New York; also numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Edgar R. Smith; and her sister, Marilyn Sailor.

Her memorial service is being planned in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name to Honor Flight, 300 E. Auburn Ave., Springfield, OH 45505. Honor Flight transports veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit and reflect at their memorials.
