FREDERICKTOWN — Homer S. Mavis Jr., 80, of Fredericktown died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Homer was born April 10, 1929, in Mansfield to Homer S. Mavis Sr. and Jennie (Frasher) Mavis. He attended school in Danville through the eighth grade and graduated from Upper Sandusky High School in the class of 1947. Homer served with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. He owned and operated Mavis Plumbing and Heating in Fredericktown from 1972 until his retirement in 1992 and was active in Fredericktown community affairs.
Homer was a member of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church, was an honorary member of the Fredericktown Fire Department and Rescue Squad. He was also a member of the Joe Cocanower Post 500 of the American Legion in Fredericktown and the Colonial City Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon. Homer was a 60-year member of Bellville Masonic Lodge 376.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Schivinski) Mavis, whom he married May 19, 1951; his sons, Thomas Mavis of New London, Ohio, and Richard J. “Rick” Mavis of Mount Vernon; his daughter, Julie (Michael) Buzzo of Battle Creek, Mich.; four grandchildren, Ryan Mavis, Amy Mavis, Katie Buzzo and Adam Buzzo; his brother, James Mavis of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Homer was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Ruth Mavis.
Friends may call Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fredericktown United Methodist Church, 123 Columbus Road, Fredericktown, OH 43019, where funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Gary Campbell will officiate. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
