WAPAKONETA — George M. Gardner, 57, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Wapakoneta, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 15, 2010, at his nephew’s residence in Wapakoneta.

He was born Feb. 10, 1952, in Lima, the son of Edward and Martha (Burden) Gardner, who preceded him in death. On March 29, 1996, he married Lorisa Walpole, and she survives in Mount Vernon. Other survivors include, five daughters, Heather (Dan) Carter, Jennifer (Scott) Snider, Lindsay (Nathan McKeen) Legg and Shawnda Walpole, all of Mount Vernon, and Rebecca (Jerry) Jackson of Columbus; five grandchildren, Abigail and Jerry Wayne Jackson III, Jessica and Joseph Carter and Dylan Carter; a brother, James (Mary) Gardner of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Kim Morris of Lima; and numerous nieces and nephews, including James and David Gardner, both of Wapakoneta.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Lee Nichols III; and three infant sisters.

Mr. Gardner was a retired machinist with Rolls-Royce Industries in Mount Vernon. He was currently enrolled at Rhodes State University, Lima. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was very dedicated to veteran organizations and was an active volunteer for several veteran fundraisers.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home, State Route 501, Wapakoneta, with Marty McPheron officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta VFW 8445, following the service at the funeral home. The family will receive friends today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
