MOUNT VERNON — Michael Chopek, 85, of Mount Vernon died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Akron, a son of the late John and Mary Chopek. Michael retired from AMG Industries in Mount Vernon with over 30 years of faithful service. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre and was a member of the VFW and AMVETS in Mount Vernon. Michael attended St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.
Michael is survived by his sons, Joseph M. (Barbara) Chopek Sr. of Magnolia, Texas, and Mike (Stacy) Chopek of Mount Vernon; a daughter, Michelle (Jim) Wurtz of Mokena, Ill.; grandchildren, Joseph Chopek Jr., Katherine and Allison Wurtz, and Anna Michaela Chopek; and sisters, Anne Jordan of Florida and Helen Kavalli of Akron.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his wife, Elvera (Campailla) Chopek; a grandchild, Kendall Chopek; brothers, Paul and Joe Chopek; and a sister, Patricia Hetrick.
The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 22, from 5 p.m. until the time of a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. The Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond will lead the prayer service. Military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be held at the funeral home following the prayer service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Akron.
