CENTERBURG — Jacqueline Ann McCalla Cordle, 85, of Centerburg passed away at her daughter’s residence surrounded by her family.
Jacque was a counselor and supporter of the Centerburg Community and will be greatly missed by many.
She was born on Dec. 27, 1924, in Mount Vernon to the late Hugh Wilson and Eva Louise (Hobbs) McCalla. In addition to her parents she was preceded by her husband of 63 years, Harold P. “Butch” Cordle; sister, Sarah Louise Wolf; and brother, Robert McCalla.
Jacque was a longtime member of the Centerburg United Methodist Church where she served a choir director for 49 years. She operated the Centerburg Unit of the Salvation Army for 32 years and founded the Centerburg Golden Age Club and later the Centerburg Senior Services. Jacque was a civic leader and named a “Knox County Mover and Shaker.” She served on the board of the Knox County Adult Education Career Center and the Knox County Mental Health Board. She was a longtime member of Centerburg Alpha Club and served as a district president of the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs. Member of the Knox Community Hospital Auxiliary, and an ardent supporter of the local fire department and Knox County Sheriff’s Department. Named the 2007 Knox County Outstanding Senior Citizen and recognized as a 2008 American Red Cross Humanitarian Hero.
Jacque graduated from Centerburg High School in 1942 and from Otterbein College in 1946 with a Bachelors of Art degree. She was a teacher, guidance counselor and general supporter of the Centerburg schools for over 65 years.
Survived by her children, Christopher (Susan Palmer) of Centerburg, Erin Louise of Grandview Heights and Jacqueline Ann of Centerburg; sister, Jean Hobbs of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Andrew (April) Cordle and Ammie Louise Boggs; and great-granddaughter, Alexandra Elizabeth.
Friends may call Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Old Centerburg High School, 119 S. Preston St., Centerburg. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Centerburg United Methodist Church, 65 S. Hartford Ave., Centerburg, with Pastor Vicky Kelley officiating. Private graveside service will be held for the family Monday in the Eastview Cemetery. Arrangements in care of the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury.
