JOHNSTOWN — George E. Martin, 81, of Johnstown went to meet his Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at St. Ann’s Hospital, after a severe stroke.
He was born Jan. 17, 1929, to the late Charles E. and A. Louise (Gould) Martin. George graduated from Purdue University with a BS in metallurgical engineering, where he also participated in the marching band. His father graduated with a BSME in the same class, which was a first for Purdue. He was a welding engineer and had worked for many companies including North American Aviation. His projects included many airplanes, Apollo, railway passenger cars and city buses. George was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, American Welding Society and National Rifle Association. He married the former Louise M. Finehout and she preceded him in death.
He was a loving and generous father whose surviving family includes six sons, Raymond (Ann), South Bend, Ind., Robert, Salt Lake City, Utah, Willard (Joan), Dublin, Donald (Cathi), Prineville, Ore., James (Pamela), Johnstown, and Stephen (Terri), Silverton, Wash.; four daughters, Lois (Andrew) Moffat, Newark, Doris (Dale) Pennington, Columbus, Danie (Emily) Martin, Bryn Mawr, Pa., Kathrine (Mike) Zimmerman, London; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and brother, C. Arthur Martin, Auburn, Wash.
George was preceded in death by parents, wife, and two grandchildren.
Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. The funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon.
