MARION — Brenda L. Ackerman, 50, of Marion, her graceful and courageous four-year battle with cancer ended Thursday, March 25, 2010, at home with her family.
She is survived by and was born to Raymond and Marcella (Fulton) Atkinson on Oct. 27, 1959, she was the eldest of a brother Gregg (Maureen) Atkinson of Xenia, Ohio, and a sister, Dena (Jim) Quinn of Trinidad, Colo., all of whom survive. She was a 1978 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and attended Miami University for one year, then began working, eventually moving to Marion when hired at the Residential Home Association of Marion. It was during that time that she met and married Terry Ackerman on March 22, 1986.
Brenda was the proud and very loving mother of four children, Justine, 20, a sophomore at Ashland University, and River Valley students Hannah, 18, a senior, Ian, 14, seventh grade, Benjamin, 11, fifth grade. Brenda also cared for and nurtured for many years her self-proclaimed “adopted daughter” Lauren Jerew, 19, a freshman at The University of Iowa. Other than her children, Brenda’s proudest achievement was graduating from OSUM with a bachelor’s in English in the spring of 2005, at which time she was published in the Cornfield Review and the recipient of numerous honors and awards.
Her family will receive friends Sunday, March 28, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the St. John Windfall Lutheran Church (Windfall), 5070 Newmans-Cardington Road E., Cardington, where a celebration of life service will follow at 4:30 p.m. with Pastor Edward Wahl officiating.
