MOUNT VERNON — Mildred A. Gruver, 93, was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010, surrounded by loving family members at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Mildred was born Jan. 24, 1917, in Johnson County, Ill., to Martha and Harley Gingrich. She graduated from Toulon High School. She lived most of her adult life in Kankakee and was a retired head cook from Kankakee City Schools. She taught children in Sunday school for 50 years. The past eight years, she has been living in Beech Tree Apartments in Mount Vernon. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Green Valley Southern Baptist Church.
Mildred is survived by son Daryl Gruver and his wife Lena of Mount Vernon, son Larry Gruver and his wife Phyllis of Campbellsville, Ky.; grandsons, Scott Gruver and his wife Xiufeng of Boston, Aaron Gruver, his wife Kristi and expected great-grandchild of University Heights, and Jason Gruver of Louisville; granddaughters, Sara Gruver of Newark and Stacy Morris and her husband Kyle of Peoria, Ill., and Lovena Milburn of Toulon, Ill.; nephews, nieces and cousins; stepdaughters, Delores Long and Darlene Franke of Freeburg, Ill., and Mary Ann Little of Kenosha, Wis.; and special friends the Melanie and Dean Gould family of Fredericktown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel L. Gruver; her parents; her sisters, Lillian Trompeter and Imogene Ervin; her brother, Delbert Gingrich; and her stepson, Bobby Gruver.
Friends may call Saturday, April 3, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Schreffler Funeral Home, 1900 W. Court St., Kankakee, IL 60901. The service will follow beginning at 11 a.m. The committal services will be held in Mound Grove Cemetery in Illinois. The Snyder Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
