MOUNT VERNON — Jeffrey Robert Stelts, 57, of Mount Vernon died Saturday, April 17, 2010, at his residence of an apparent heart attack.

Jeff was born Feb. 18, 1953, in Mount Vernon to Robert E. Stelts and Shirley Jane (Rossi) Stelts Lucas. He was a 1971 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and had spent his lifetime in Mount Vernon. He had been employed at several places but retired June 1, 2004, from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center where he had been employed as an activity therapy specialist. Jeff loved history, politics, and genealogy, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was an avid Ohio State University, Buckeye fan and a fan of the Cleveland Indians.

Surviving are his best friend and wife, Laurie (Streby) Stelts, whom he married May 25, 1979; his children, Carrie (Chris) Banks, Jason Stelts and Michael (Jen) Stelts; grandchildren, David and Daniel Hill, Jessilyn Stelts and Christian Banks; his beloved boxer, Penny; his stepmother, Polly (Spearman) Stelts; stepsister, Terri (Mel) Green; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jane and Dean Streby; sisters-in-law, Joni Rhoads and Carole (Terry) Casto; brother-in-law, Mike (Wendy) Streby; nieces and nephews, Biffany (Scott) Boozer, Jason (Melanie) Casto, Pete Rhoads, Morgan and McKenzie Streby and Christen Green; and aunts, uncles, cousins and his extended family at Country Court Nursing Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will observe private calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
